We met the sunshine of a woman, Summer, the lady genius behind SunClub. She makes her pieces in her studio in Rainbow Beach, mostly from upcycled materials, and she does the lot herself: the design, the pattern-making and the sewing. That is why her shackets and towel skirts feel like summer before you've even left the house.
So Summer designed a print for a Plow bucket hat. Hot pink, sunny yellow and that hibiscus brim. Then we made it a surf hat.
Why SunClub
SunClub started in October 2022, inspired by salty beach days, and it's made for any age, size or sex. Slow made, recycled paper swing tags, compostable mailers. Summer and Plow go back a while: shared cabana content, a joint giveaway, lending each other gear on road trips. The hat was the obvious next step.
The print
Summer designed the whole print. Rose crown, wavy pink bands, the SUN CLUB band around the middle and white hibiscus on the brim.
What makes it a surf hat, not just a cute hat

- Soft neoprene chin strap with dual tightening, so you can dial in the fit
- Firm front half brim that holds its shape when wet and stays off your eyes
- Bucket shape that shades the face, ears and neck
- The option of a removable Legionnaires flap that buttons on for neck and ears

For the whole crew
Our shoot at Wanda Beach had toddler Wren in an XS with the flap on all afternoon. She crawled into the shorebreak and the hat stayed put. At Cronulla the next morning Sam took it from the ocean pool to a full SunClub fit, shacket and towel skirt included.
A sun hat only protects you if you actually wear it, so this one had to be the hat you want to wear.
