Not to make it all about us, but how did you discover Plow?
Iโm pretty sure it was years ago now, when we were travelling around the northwest of Australia and surfing our brains outโฆsafe to say i quickly realised that my face needed some serious sun protection and thatโs when I stumbled across Plow! I only wish I found you earlier!!
Whatโs your favourite Plow (excluding our collab hat of course!)?
The Bloominโ Groover would be my next fave! Such a fun print!
How long have you been living on the road, and what made you start?
Weโve been living on the road for five years, chasing adventure and waves all around Australia. We left Sydney and hit the road to escape the hustle and bustle of city life, only planning on being away for a year total. Iโm originally from the US and desperately wanted to see more of the country I now call home, which was what made us choose the slower Vanlife style of travel.
Are you following a particular route, or just seeing where the road takes you?
When we set off, we had a rough idea of the general โlapโ of Aus, aiming to go counter clockwise and time it with the seasons, but COVID threw a spanner in the works and changed our lap completely! We quickly realised that making plans while living on the road is pretty silly โ theyโre almost guaranteed to change. So we swapped our plans for following the sun and waves and never looked back.
Whatโs the best part about living on the road?
The freedom! You have your entire home with you at all times, so you can really go wherever you want, whenever you want (for the most part). You have the choice to stay at a place for weeks if youโre loving it, or move onto somewhere else if itโs not tickling your fancy. That freedom is a truly incredible feeling and is something I will never take for granted.
We love our Plow Jimny but your old Landie is heller cool. Can you tell us a bit about converting her?ย
(Side note: Nigel is a he! lol)
We were SO stoked to get Nigel and fit him out. We did the entire build in a month (definitely donโt recommend putting that stress on yourself haha) and made him our complete home on wheels. Heโs a high maintenance olโ man (43 years to be exact) and has no air con, power steering or radio but we love every little bit of him and the places heโs taken us.
We love that Leo is along for the ride. Does he sleep up in the tent with you?
Leo loves his Landy! But heโs way too big to sleep with us in the tent, so we made the โdownstairsโ area a big comfy couch for him to sleep on.
Do you have any tips for anyone considering hitting the road in a van?
Definitely rent a few different styles vans/4WDs out before you commit to doing your own! This way youโll learn what you do and donโt like about each set up and can make yours customised to your wants and needs. Oh and also, you donโt need to pack as many clothes as you think!!
Whereโs your favourite off-the-beaten-track surf spot?
Itโs not necessarily off the beaten track, but the left at Whartonโs Beach in Esperance can be SO much fun, especially if youโre a goofy footer like me. I also really loved surfing in Exmouth over the winter months (particularly Dunes and Hunters)
Because weโre all about sun safety, we have to ask! What suncream do you use?
Great question!! I always turn to the We Are Feel Good surf zinc for my face and their SPF 50 sunscreen for my body.
Can you share any big plans you have for 2025?
Weโre actually in the beginning stages of doing a full tiny home build to have as a home base between our travels! Itโs a massive project but something we feel so called to doing. We also have some fun international trips planned, canโt share exactly where just yet but letโs just say my Plow hat will be coming in handy ;)
