Lokahi Collins x Plow Surf Co – Interview

What was it like growing up in Hawai‘i?

“Growing up in Hawai‘i was a truly meaningful experience. As a native, I deeply appreciated the rich culture and the strong sense of community and ‘ohana that shaped my upbringingi.”

Who introduced you to surfing, and what do you remember about your first sessions?

“Both of my parents were lifelong surfers, and my mom even competed professionally. They were my first teachers. Some of my earliest memories are of them taking me into the ocean—whether it was just to lie on the board or to catch tiny waves they pushed me into.”

How has surfing shaped your lifestyle and connection to the ocean?

“Surfing has transformed my life in countless ways, deepening my connection to the ocean and nature. It has shaped my lifestyle—from the activities I enjoy and the friendships I’ve built to the vision I have for the life I want to live.”

What does your typical surf routine look like these days?

“My typical surf routine begins early in the morning with checking wave reports and surf cams to choose the best spot for the day. I pack up my gear, see if any friends want to join, and then head out.”

How do you incorporate sun safety into your daily surf routine?

“I do my best to stay protected from the sun by using face and body sunscreen, wearing a UV-protective rash guard, and always bringing a good hat.”

What role do hats or other gear play in keeping you protected in and out of the water?

“I love wearing a hat both in and out of the water—especially one with chin straps. It not only protects my face and upper body from sunburn, but also keeps hair out of my eyes, allowing me to stay focused on surfing and fully present in any moment.”

What’s most important to you when it comes to staying sun safe?

“I’m always mindful of minimizing the risk of skin cancer, premature aging, and dark spots, so practicing sun safety is something I prioritize every day.”

How do you think we can teach the next generation of surfers about protecting themselves from the sun while still enjoying time in the ocean?

“I believe social media is a very effective way to promote sun safety to the younger generation—by educating and showing them we can lead by example. Inspiring them to adopt good simple and easy sun safety habits.”

What advice would you give young surfers growing up in Hawai‘i or other coastal places?

“Keep pushing forward, no matter how tough it gets or what others say. Your success depends on how much you believe in yourself. Stay respectful, have fun, and go rip!!”

Lastly, what does surfing mean to you now compared to when you first started?

“Since I began, surfing has evolved from a weekend pastime into something I eagerly anticipate every moment. Competing in contests, making friends worldwide, and building a career from it have profoundly transformed my life and lifestyle. I’m deeply grateful for every second of this journey and so excited for everything to come!”

Lokahi’s journey reminds us that surfing is more than just a sport—it’s a lifelong relationship with the ocean, a community, and a way of life. We’re stoked to share his story and hope it inspires you to ride your own wave with purpose, passion, and protection.
